When spring arrives in Seoul, many people look for places where they can enjoy nature, even within the city. In those moments when I need to take a break from the busy pace of life, I think of Nodeul Island, a small island right in the middle of the Han River.

Nodeul Island is the perfect escape from the city’s hustle and bustle, blending nature and art in a peaceful space. It’s the ideal spot for a relaxing walk or a quiet picnic. As someone who lives in Seoul, I’ve come to cherish this special place, and I’d love to share it with visitors to Korea as well.

What is Nodeul Island?

Nodeul Island is an artificial island located under the Hangang Bridge, connecting Yongsan and Dongjak districts. It’s easy to get to — about a 15-minute walk from Nodeul Station (Subway Line 9). If you’re coming from Yongsan Station, it takes around 30 minutes on foot.

Reaching the Riverside Area

Once you arrive on Nodeul Island, don’t expect immediate river views. You’ll pass through some cafes, shops, and open spaces before reaching the riverside lawn.
There’s a staircase you’ll need to go down, then walk across a grassy field and through a narrow path before you’re finally rewarded with a full view of the Han River.

On Nodeul Island, you'll experience the perfect blend of nature and city life.

Here, surrounded by greenery, you can spot the subway crossing the Han River, as well as towering buildings in the distance. It’s this beautiful contrast — the serenity of nature with the pulse of a modern city — that makes Nodeul Island so special.

Pro Tip: Bring everything you need before heading down to the river. There are no shops right by the water, and walking back up takes effort!

Weekend Crowds & Finding a Spot

Weekends can get very crowded. If you’re planning to visit on a Saturday or Sunday afternoon, arrive early to secure a good picnic spot. There are benches, but they’re limited — most people bring their own mats.

Where to Get a Picnic Mat

There’s a convenience store on Nodeul Island, and while they do sell picnic mats, they tend to sell out quickly on weekends. If you want to avoid the hassle, grab a mat at the convenience store inside Nodeul Station — it’s usually cheaper and more convenient.

There are also shops near Exit 3 of Nodeul Station that rent picnic mats, but many require you to rent them as part of a food package. If you only need a mat, just buying one is the easiest option. One mat typically fits 2–3 people.

Han River Ramen – A Must-Try!

Inside the Nodeul Island convenience store, you’ll find the famous Han River Ramen machine. Instead of a regular cup noodle, you get to pick your own ramen and cook it using a special machine.

Sitting by the river, eating hot ramen while the breeze blows? That’s one of those "only in Korea" experiences you don’t want to miss.

Visit Before It Closes for Renovation!

There are recent reports that Nodeul Island might undergo renovations soon, which could make it unavailable for public access for a while. If you’re in Seoul and the weather is good, now’s the perfect time to check it out before it’s temporarily closed.
